PRIDE AS A TEACHER I got an e-mail from a student I had over the summer. He was a fantastic math student. His research topic was Group Theory. During the first couple of meetings, I explained what a group was. In only a month, he started solving some Ph.D. Qualifying Exam problems in Group Theory that I found for him. It was awesome! Anyhow, his e-mail told me that he had just gotten his first college acceptance letter -- to Caltech. I applied to Caltech myself (and didn't get in), but now it seems I am capable of recommending students to go whose applications are accepted.
